One of the things I love most about running The Art Room is is the new opportunities it brings and that is why I am so pleased to be involved with Barnsley’s Great Childhoods Ambition.
What is Great Childhoods Ambition?
Great Childhoods Ambition is a Barnsley-wide programme designed to give children, young people and families access to experiences and opportunities that help create a great childhood. It brings together local organisations and partners to provide activities across Barnsley – from sport and outdoor adventures to arts, crafts, cultural activities, family events and youth activities.

The Art Room's part in Great Childhoods Ambition
As a local creative business, I am delighted that The Art Room is able to play a small part in this fantastic programme. I will be running a free family willow weaving drop-in session at Worsbrough Mill, giving children and their grown-ups the opportunity to work with natural willow and create something of their own.
Willow is such a wonderful material to work with. It is natural, tactile and incredibly forgiving. You don't have to be perfect – you can bend it, twist it, weave it and experiment with it.

Creativity, nature and family time
Worsbrough Mill is a particularly lovely setting for this kind of activity.
The mill sits within a beautiful 240-acre country park, surrounded by nature and wildlife, making it a wonderful place for families to spend time together. Bringing willow weaving into this environment feels like a perfect fit. For children, it is an opportunity to slow down, use their hands, make decisions and see an idea develop into something they can take home. For adults, it can be a chance to step away from the usual busy routine and be creative alongside their children. And for everyone, it is simply a chance to make something together.
Why projects like this matter
As someone who has worked with children in schools and community settings for many years, I know how valuable creative experiences can be. Creativity gives children opportunities to experiment, problem-solve and make choices. It can build confidence and encourage them to keep going when something doesn't work the first time.
But there is another side to it too. Creative activities can bring people together.
A family sitting around a table weaving willow are talking, sharing ideas, helping each other and laughing together. Those are the little moments that become childhood memories. And that's what I think is so brilliant about Great Childhoods Ambition.
It isn't just about providing activities to fill the school holidays.
It's about creating opportunities for children and families to experience something positive together.
Proud to be part of it
As a small Barnsley business, I feel incredibly proud to be able to contribute to a programme that puts children, families and experiences at the heart of what it does.
The Art Room has always been about making creativity accessible – taking art and craft out into schools, communities and different settings and showing children that creativity is something they can all take part in.
Being part of Great Childhoods Ambition allows us to do exactly that.
So, if you see The Art Room popping up at a Barnsley family event or activity this summer, come and say hello!
Come and have a go.
Get your hands on some willow.
Make something a little bit wonky.
Try something you've never done before.
And most importantly, have fun creating something together.
